The Straw Hat Pirates (麦わら海賊団 Mugiwara Kaizokudan?) are the main focus and heroes of the anime and manga One Piece, and are led by the main protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy. "Straw Hats" after Luffy's signature straw hat, given to him by Red-Haired Shanks, and are sometimes referred to as the "Luffy Pirates" on merchandise and earlier in the series. The crew sailed on the Going Merry, their first official Straw Hat ship, up until the Water 7 Arc. After the Enies Lobby Arc, they obtained a new ship called the Thousand Sunny. The Straw Hats currently consist of nine members whose total combined bounties equal Bsymbol.gif820,000,050. Following events on the Sabaody Archipelago, all nine members were separated from one another. For two years, they trained in relatively isolated locations, becoming stronger for the sake of helping each other. After the two years of training, they reunited back on the Sabaody Archipelago.

As a result of Luffy's choice in who joins the crew, the Straw Hats are notable for being one of the most varied, if not bizarre, pirate crews in the One Piece world. Their ranks have members so vastly different from one another that it almost seems random in retrospect. These include a doctor who is a shape shifting reindeer that can be mistaken for something else depending on his form, such as a gorilla when full human, or a tanuki when in his usual mid-form; a cyborg for a shipwright who has very eccentric behavior and wears almost nothing except for shirts and speedoes; and a lively, undead, and perverted skeletal musician. Amongst them they have four Devil Fruit users which includes Luffy himself. The majority of them are also fairly young, with only three members being older than 30, although the two oldest members are just as childish as the others. Another thing is that they consider their ships to be crew members as much as the others. They are also very fun loving people.

[edit] Crew Strength

Despite only having a small number of members, the Straw Hats are a very powerful crew. Their captain has continuously defeated people who are renowned for their incredible strength such as Crocodile and Gekko Moriah of the Shichibukai, the highly feared god Enel and the infamous Rob Lucci of the CP9. The crew itself has done things which most would think impossible like defeating an entire organization and breaking in and out of The Judicial Island, Enies Lobby. In fact, after the incident that occurred at Enies Lobby, the World Government has labeled them as a very dangerous crew. All of them have at least one talent at which they are virtually perfect at and each crew member is more or less a formidable fighter in their own right. While most of them have amazing strength in one way or another, three of them, the captain, the first swordsman, and the chef, have such astonishingly inhuman strength that the rest of the crew have dubbed them the "Monster Trio". Each crew member in the beginning has some fairly high fighting abilities, but as they progressed each crew member has had to become stronger due to each opponent they encounter either being significantly stronger than the last or has required them to develop new skills or techniques to combat new opponents.

On our journey across the islands, all of us became stronger without even noticing.

— Part of Zoro's speech to Nami and Chopper about Usopp

While each crew member can hold their own by themselves, what makes the Straw Hats truly strong is their teamwork, which has become more important as the series has progressed. When one of them is incapable of doing a task, another can help out in their place instead. This helps the crew very much in facing odds that may be too much for them if they work separately.

I'll do what you cannot do. Now you go do what I cannot do!!!

— Part of Sanji's speech to Usopp.

The Straw Hats with some of their newfound strengths after the timeskip

By the end of their two-year-long training, the Straw Hats have grown exponentially in individual power, as some of them took their self-imposed training under the tutelage of prominent figures of the sea like Silvers Rayleigh, Dracule Mihawk, Emporio Ivankov, and Monkey D. Dragon. Each member of the Monster Trio (Luffy, Zoro and Sanji) have shown to be able to defeat a Pacifista in a single attack, whereas it took the combined efforts of the entire crew to barely beat one before. Luffy easily destroyed a Pacifista with a single Haki-embued Jet Pistol, and Zoro and Sanji, the latter possibly using his Diable Jambe, both dealt crippling blows to a Pacifista with raw strength. Zoro and Sanji each used attacks that likely would have been sufficient to destroy the Pacifista on their own, had they not been trying to outdo each other. Another example of the Monster Trio's strength is that they were able to defeat a sea monster such as the Kraken without much of an effort. Keep in mind that the Kraken is several times larger than the Thousand Sunny itself.

It seems that during their two-year absence, the Marines have remained ever-vigilant in case they return, despite the major belief they all mysteriously died off, as when a group of impostors appeared in Sabaody Archipelago, the Marines immediately mobilized to stop them.

Overall, their most unique strength is the fact the Straw Hat Crew, on many occassions, are extremely lucky. Often accomplishing their objective, which usually had a very slim chance to ever succeed, due to this luck.

[edit] Profession and Capabilities

[edit] Bounties

Though they are pirates in name, the Straw Hat Pirates do not engage in the stereotypical activities of pirates. In fact, before the Enies Lobby arc, when CP9 initiated the conflict by blackmailing Nico Robin and detaining her, the Straw Hat Pirates mostly fought only other pirates (with the exception of Luffy and Zoro, who took down the dreaded Axe Hand Morgan and several of his unwilling subordinates,[1] and Sanji, who beat up Fullbody and possibly some other unfortunate Marines prior to becoming an official Straw Hat)[2] - it seems they were considered dangerous to the World Government and given bounties simply because they called themselves pirates. They are considered villains by the World Government and the general public who aren't familiar with them. While this is a hassle for them, like most other pirates, the majority of the Straw Hats see their bounties as a form of achievement, a sign of how much fame and recognition their actions have produced. Nami notes that, as pirates, they are used to taking blame and being portrayed as the villains.

Following their return from their training before setting sail for the New World, new bounty posters were released with updated pictures for Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji, Usopp and Brook. The most important changes include a picture of Usopp without his Sogeking mask (though he's still named "Sogeking" on his bounty poster), and a picture of Brook as a skeleton. A real picture of Sanji is now used, though it is of the back of his head.[3] Their current bounties total up to Bsymbol.gif820,000,050.

[edit] Profile

Luffybounty.jpg
Straw Hat Luffy

As the captain of the crew, Luffy has been recognized by the World Government as the most dangerous person of the Straw Hats. Originally, due to Luffy being a relatively new pirate, the World Government didn't pay much attention to him. However, with each new outrageous exploit Luffy and his crew accomplished, the World Government's view of Luffy changed.

  • First bounty: Bsymbol.gif30,000,000 for defeating the top pirates of East Blue.
  • Second bounty: Bsymbol.gif100,000,000 for defeating Crocodile of the Shichibukai.
  • Third bounty: Bsymbol.gif300,000,000 for defeating Blueno and Rob Lucci of the CP9, for orchestrating the assault on Enies Lobby, and for declaring war against the World Government.
  • Fourth bounty: Bsymbol.gif400,000,000 for his involvement in the Whitebeard War and related incidents, as well as being revealed as Dragon's son.
Zoro's Wanted Poster
Pirate Hunter Roronoa Zoro

Recognized as a powerful fighter within the Straw Hats through his battles with various opponents, Zoro was given a bounty by the World Government with just as much recognition as Luffy in terms of being a powerful threat.

  • First bounty: Bsymbol.gif60,000,000 for defeating 100 bounty hunters and Daz Bones.
  • Second bounty: Bsymbol.gif120,000,000 for his involvement with his fellow Straw Hats in the Enies Lobby incident.
Nami's Wanted Poster
Cat Burglar Nami

For her involvement with her fellow crew members in Enies Lobby and defeating Kalifa, Nami was recognized as a threat by the World Government and was given a bounty of Bsymbol.gif16,000,000. While most of the other Straw Hats are impressed at having bounties, Nami doesn't particularly like being a wanted person. Her picture was taken under the false pretense of a reporter wanting to do an article on her, hence the sexy pose.

Usopp's Wanted Poster
The King Of The Snipers Sogeking

For his involvement with his fellow crew members in Enies Lobby, and in particular setting fire to the World Government flag and sniping off marines on the Bridge of Hesitation, Usopp was recognized as a threat by the World Government and was given a bounty of Bsymbol.gif30,000,000. Due to Usopp disguising himself as Sogeking at the time, the authorities attributed Usopp's bounty to his Sogeking persona. While most people easily recognize Usopp as Sogeking, the people of Usopp's village (with the exception of Kaya and the former Usopp's Pirates) don't recognize that they are both the same person.

Sanji's Wanted Poster
Black Leg Sanji

For his involvement with his fellow crew members in Enies Lobby, Sanji was recognized as a threat by the World Government and was given a bounty of Bsymbol.gif77,000,000 after he defeated jyabura of CP9. However, because Attachan of the Marines forgot to remove the lens cap when taking the picture, a proper picture of Sanji was not taken. Instead, a crude drawing that barely looks like him was substituted. This, along with other incidents involving the picture, are part of a running gag on how Sanji has bad luck being recognized because of his bounty image.

Chopper's Wanted Poster
Cotton Candy Lover Chopper

Due to being mistaken for a pet, and thus not much of a threat, the World Government gave Chopper a measly Bsymbol.gif50 bounty.

Robin's Wanted Poster
Demon Child Nico Robin

While a cover story was given to the general public to explain Robin's initial bounty, the actual reason was because the World Government saw her ability to read Poneglyphs as a threat to world safety. After joining up with the Straw Hats, however, the Government's view of her became more genuine.

  • First bounty: Bsymbol.gif79,000,000 for sinking six Buster Call battleships (in truth, for her ability to read Poneglyphs).
  • Second bounty: Bsymbol.gif80,000,000 for her involvement with her fellow Straw Hats in the Enies Lobby incident.
Franky's Wanted Poster
Cyborg Franky

While his gang's involvement in the invasion of Enies Lobby was covered up, Franky's own involvement with the Straw Hats was recognized. For that and for burning the blueprints for Pluton he was given a bounty of Bsymbol.gif44,000,000.

Brook's Wanted Poster
Humming Brook

In his previous life, Brook had gained a bounty of Bsymbol.gif33,000,000 for piracy. This bounty and the picture accompanying it were issued fifty years ago. After the timeskip, Brook's managers sell him out to the Marines, allowing them to connect Brook's skeletal appearance to the picture in the wanted poster. They also learn of his connection to the Straw Hats.

[edit] Relationships amongst the Crew

The Straw Hats are very much like a close knit family.

Each member of the crew values their friendships very highly. Despite their usual comic annoyance with each other from time to time, they very much love being together as well as being a member of the crew. One of the major themes of the series is how committed they are to each other, to the point where they are willing to give up what is important to them, such as their lives, and even their dreams, for one of their crew members. If one single member is hurt by an outside force (physically or emotionally), the other members will become enraged and take drastic action to avenge their friends. Previously, they have gone as far as to take on an entire organization, make enemies with the World Government, and even attack the World Nobles.

Examples of their friendship include: during their fight with Bartholomew Kuma, Sanji, Zoro and Brook threw themselves in front of their friends to keep Kuma from getting to them and after Luffy was immersed in sadness due to Ace´s death, not only was he able to overcome his pain by remembering that he still had his crew. When the rest of the crew realized how hurt Luffy would be, they struggled to return to him for support. Upon receiving his message to wait two years, they each resolved to use that time to hone their skills in order to be more useful to Luffy and protect each other better from any danger.

[edit] Recruitment

In the beginning of the manga, Luffy claimed that he wanted at least 10 people to join his crew before entering the Grand Line (not counting himself).[4] This was changed after Usopp told Luffy that after "the chef" joined them, they would rescue Nami and go to the Grand Line. Although this is long past the expiring date, it can still serve as evidence that there will be 10 or more Straw Hats at one point of the manga (excluding Luffy himself). Luffy also claimed in the beginning of the manga, that he would gather a crew strong enough to surpass his childhood hero Red-Haired Shanks.[5]

[edit] Invitation

Luffy invites Zoro to join his crew.

Usually when he asks someone to join, Luffy is turned down completely; the way of which he is turned down varies. Luffy has enough morals not to force the person to join against their will. When Luffy asked Brook during the Thriller Bark saga, Brook said yes immediately. Luffy didn't directly ask Usopp to join the Straw Hats, however when both Luffy and Usopp were about to sail off, Luffy assumed that Usopp would join them as they had just fought off Kuro. The only exception was Franky who was stated to be too stubborn to ever accept joining Luffy willingly (his speedo had to be stolen just to lead him back to the Straw Hat Pirates), but ends up joining willingly anyway after being moved by Iceburg's words. However if the person really interests Luffy, he will still try to get them to join anyway regardless of their initial decision. While most people turn down Luffy's offer regardless of how hard he tries, only those convinced enough will join for reasons of their own. However, even if he is rejected, Luffy will treat the person as if they were already a crew member, much to their annoyance. He'll sometimes act as if it is his decision and not theirs whether they join or not.

The major exceptions to this rule are Usopp, who was thrilled to be asked to join and accepted immediately, and Nico Robin, who invited herself into the crew and had to convince the crew to let her stay. Also notable is the Gentleman Skeleton Brook, who actually accepted Luffy's initial invitation to join the crew but later claimed that he couldn't honor it due to his lack of a shadow, which would result in his death should he step into sunlight, as well as unfinished business with the zombies of Thriller Bark. However, after the Straw Hats and Brook finally defeated the zombies, Brook later asked if they would honor his initial acceptance; Luffy gladly welcomed him into the crew.

Luffy doesn't seem to mind if someone he wants to recruit has a profession or not. He allows Usopp to join, and later on names him the team's sniper, and considered Vivi a member even though her only "profession" would be princess. He also did not know that Chopper was a doctor and wanted him to join for his seven transformation abilities. He also offered Gaimon and several Thriller Bark Zombie the chance to join his crew, when they had no apparent usefulness to the crew aside from experience. Also, when a crew member finally joins, they are often run out of their home by loved ones.

[edit] Recruiting Process

Though most adventures in One Piece are random, there seems to be a 'process' for recruitment. First, a situation arises where someone new is needed. The crew comes across someone who fulfills the criteria (i.e. Chopper the doctor, Nami the navigator). Luffy offers the person a position, and is usually turned down initially (which usually causes Luffy to comically "refuse this refusal"). Meanwhile, a situation arises where, some way or another, Luffy ends up battling a 'boss' character, and the would-be crew mate battles an underling (i.e. Luffy vs Don Krieg after Sanji battles Gin and Pearl). The would-be crewmate typically defeats one of the villain's henchmen, or otherwise plays a crucial role in the Straw Hats' victory (for example, Brook defeats Talleran and reveals the zombies' weakness, despite losing to Ryuuma). During the arc in which the new crewmate is introduced their backstory and dreams are revealed, (although Nami and Robin's back story's were reveled later) thus convincing them to join the Straw Hat Crew. Meanwhile, Luffy's current crew would assist him in battling various enemies generally in rank of abilities and overall strength which is matched by whoever they are battling (i.e. Zoro vs Kaku, Sanji vs Jyabura, Chopper vs Kumadori, Nami vs Kalifa), the enemies fought also have similar fighting styles (Zoro vs Hachi who are both swordsman, Sanji vs Kuroobi who are both melee fighting experts, and Usopp vs Chew who are both ranged weaponry experts), this is more consistent when it concerns Sanji and Zoro. This process also led many fans to think Vivi would become a permanent crew member.

The only crew members not to follow this process were the women of the crew, Nami and Robin, both of whom never helped fight an enemy during their joining and had their backstories fully revealed later on, despite initially being hinted at. Nami's official recruitment was when Luffy, Zoro, Usopp and Sanji defeated Arlong and his pirates. Robin was the first to initially willingly join, and officially joined after Luffy's crew came to her rescue from CP9.

As a side note to this process, Luffy has several times stated the need for a musician[6], because he believes that "pirates love music" due to him being influenced by Shanks the captain of the Red-Haired Pirates whom are mostly seen singing and partying. As a result, whenever the need for a new crew member arises, Luffy would usually bring up the musician position despite it being completely unrelated to the problem at hand. While Franky plays the guitar in addition of being a shipwright, Luffy's plea was finally fulfilled when Brook joined the crew.

[edit] Background

Usually when the “Recruitment Process” comes up a tragic background story in revealed

Luffy: Luffy was the last to have his story to be revealed as he being the captain his story didn't end until the end of Part I in he was also the first character to have a tragic story in the series' present. Ace's death sent Luffy into a mental breakdown like Sabo's death affected Ace and Luffy before. In a short end Luffy lost his Brothers.

[edit] Crew Numbers

The crew of the Straw Hat Pirates as they appear during their introductions.

Excluding Luffy, as he founded the crew, the numbers given to each crew member are:

  1. Roronoa Zoro[7]
  2. Nami[8]
  3. Usopp[9]
  4. Sanji[10]
  5. Tony Tony Chopper
  6. Nico Robin
  7. Franky[9]
  8. Brook

Usually when numbering the crew on colour spreads however, Oda will include Luffy as #1 thus the crew members get +1 added onto their numbers. For most of the crew members, Oda designates their number in the title of the chapter in which they join. For some like Nami and Usopp, their numbers were designated after they returned to the crew for previously leaving it. Only Chopper and Robin so far have no chapters whose titles designate them. In the case of Robin, though she has yet to have a number chapter, she however was numbered as the 7th one in the anime. This however refers to her being the 7th character in the crew which includes Luffy.

[edit] Returning to the Crew

Crew toasting to the reunited Robin and Usopp, new crew member Franky and new ship - Thousand Sunny.

If a Straw Hat crew member leaves the crew without Luffy's permission, Luffy usually does his best to recruit them back. So far Nami, Robin and Usopp have all left the crew, and all of them have returned. Nami rejoined after Arlong was defeated, who blackmailed her into betraying the crew, while Robin rejoined the crew after they convinced her that they would stand by her even if it meant declaring war on the entire world, and saving her from Enies Lobby.

While Robin and Nami were never on bad terms with the crew when they left, any suspicion that they had betrayed the Straw Hats was soon proven false. Usopp was a different case though. He had officially left the Straw Hat crew, over a dispute concerning the Going Merry (yet returned to the crew in his alias "Sogeking" to help in the rescue of Nico Robin) and his own insecurities about his strength. Afterward, Usopp originally planned to make the crew beg for him to return, but Zoro had given the crew a stern speech about him rejoining them on their terms, not his, and would accept him only if Usopp begged them after a thorough apology. After being ignored while they were fighting off Garp, Usopp finally capitulated, and Luffy happily and tearfully accepted him back into the crew.

[edit] Dreams

Each member of the Straw Hats has a dream they want to achieve. These dreams are their reasons for joining Luffy's crew, and essentially the driving force behind their lives. Each Straw Hat's dream was inspired by tragedies (often deaths) in their childhoods that involved at least one person they idolized and cared for deeply. Some, like Chopper, Nami, Franky, and Usopp are fulfilling their dreams by accumulating knowledge and/or achieving a certain task while sailing the Grand Line. Others, like Robin, Zoro, Luffy, Brook, and Sanji are searching for a person, place or thing that can only be found on the Grand Line. Whatever the reason, each of the Straw Hat's dreams involve traveling the Grand Line, and each Straw Hat member refuses to die before achieving their dreams. However, their determination doesn't extend to sacrificing or abandoning their comrades for the fulfillment of their dreams.

[edit] Members' Dreams

[edit] The X Mark

The Straw Hats show Vivi their 'X' marks as a silent farewell to her.

The X Mark is something the first 6 Straw Hats (Luffy through Chopper), as well as Nefertari Vivi and Carue, have on their left forearms.

During their Arabasta adventure, they had to face a very tricky opponent, Mr. 2 Bon Kurei, with his Devil Fruit Power, which can make him look like anyone of them. Zoro came up with an idea to counteract this power. They made a black X mark on their left arms, as a symbol of their belonging to the Straw Hats. To prevent this being copied by Mr 2, it was covered by a bandage, and only revealed as proof of identity. The intention being that the band appeared to be proof, but in fact concealed the true sign.

The X Mark came into play several times.

[edit] Allies and Traveling Companions

[edit] Individuals

Through the series there have been people who have either traveled with the Straw Hat Pirates for a short period of time or aided them in one way or another. Many of these individuals would be considered temporary pirates in a way. The most notable of these people is Vivi, as she traveled with them for almost the entire Baroque Works Saga, and even considered permanently joining them but due to her promise it seems that she is always welcome back.

Character(s) Arc Involved As Allies Involvement With the Straw Hats
Coby Captain Morgan arc Coby traveled briefly with Luffy after he was freed from his servitude to Alvida.[12] He later joined the Marines after the incident with Captain Morgan. He still considers Luffy his friend even though they are now on opposite sides.
Johnny and Yosaku Baratie arc to Arlong arc Two oafish but good-hearted bounty hunters who were once Zoro's partners. They traveled with and assisted the Straw Hats from Baratie to Commi Island.[13]
Nojiko and Genzo Arlong arc Two villagers who helped keep Luffy from drowning when he was temporarily submerged in the water of Arlong Park. Nojiko is Nami's adoptive sister, while Genzo is seen as a father by the two sisters.[14]
Nefertari Vivi and Carue Whiskey Peak arc to Arabasta arc The two traveled with and assisted the pirates for almost the entire Baroque Works Saga. Vivi being close to them, considered joining them and was even asked to join the group.[15] She however turned down the position in order to take care of her country, Arabasta.[16]
Dorry and Brogy Little Garden arc After the Straw Hats defeated Mr. 3 and his cohorts, and helped the two giants, the two gratefully aided the pirates by destroying the Island Eater that was blocking their path from Little Garden to Arabasta.[17]
Portgas D. Ace Arabasta arc Luffy's brother who aided the Straw Hats by stopping Smoker from catching Luffy and destroying a fleet of five Billions ships that were pursuing them.[18][19] In the anime, he sort of traveled alongside with them through the Arabastan desert while looking for some answers to Blackbeard's whereabouts.[20] He left the group to continue his search but not before giving Luffy his Vivre Card.
Mr. 2 Bon Kurei Arabasta arc, Impel Down arc Originally an enemy, he aided the Straw Hats by hiding their ship, the Going Merry, when there were Marines searching around Arabasta and by disguising himself and his men as the pirates in order to draw away the Marines pursuing them. Later, after breaking out of his cell and reuniting with Luffy in Impel Down, Mr. 2 Bon Kurei fought alongside Luffy to reach Ace. Throughout their reunion, Mr. 2 aided Luffy greatly through the various dangers of the prison, and ultimately aided Luffy and several other prisoners by sacrificing himself in order to open the way to their freedom.
Gan Fall and Pierre Skypiea arc The former god of Skypiea and his pet bird aided the Straw Hats during their time in Skypiea.
Conis and Pagaya Skypiea arc A family of Skypieans who helped the Straw Hats throughout their stay in Skypiea despite Enel's will.
Aisa and Wiper Skypiea arc Two Shandians who were originally hostile to the Straw Hats. They however aided them against Enel after getting to know them.
Kokoro, Chimney and Gonbe Water 7 arc to Post-Enies Lobby arc Though non-combatants, these three aided the Straw Hats from crossing through the stormy seas to escaping from a flooded passage. Kokoro later told them about Fishman Island.
Yokozuna Enies Lobby arc and Post-Enies Lobby arc A giant sumo frog that helped the Straw Hats from fighting against the World Government to helping build their new ship, the Thousand Sunny.
Oimo and Kāshī Enies Lobby arc and Post-Enies Lobby arc Two Elbaf giants who originally worked for the World Government as gatekeepers. However, after the truth was revealed to them by Usopp, they aided the Straw Hats and their allies in their invasion of Enies Lobby and helped rebuild Water 7 afterwards.
Keimi, Pappug and Hatchan Sabaody Archipelago arc and Fishman Island arc A mermaid, a starfish, and a former Fishman enemy that the Straw Hats traveled with and helped out during the Straw Hats' initial arrival at the Sabaody Archipelago. After the Straw Hats were separated, Hatchan helped in protecting the Thousand Sunny while they were away. When the Straw Hats came to Fishman Island, Keimi and Pappug guided them around while Hatchan rested from the wounds he received from his ordeal.
Silvers Rayleigh Sabaody Archipelago arc, Post-War Arc to Return to Sabaody Arc The legendary first mate of Gol D. Roger who has coated the Thousand Sunny for free after the Human Auctioning House incident, and also helped defend the Straw Hat Pirates against Kizaru. He later found Luffy at Amazon Lily and, along with Jinbe, the three invaded Marineford so that Luffy could ring the Ox Bell. He taught Luffy how to properly use Haki over the course of a year and a half, then assisted in his escape from the Sabaody Archipelago.
Boa Hancock Amazon Lily arc to Return to Sabaody Arc Leader of the Kuja and the only female Shichibukai and the most beautiful in all the seas. Though initially antagonistic due to Luffy discovering the slave-mark tattoo on her back, she grew to accept and even love him, probably will go where he goes, even assisting him to reach Impel Down to save his brother, Ace. Later, she gave Luffy the keys to Ace's handcuffs and defended Luffy from Smoker and the Pacifista so that he could try to save his brother. She then helped return Luffy to Amazon Lily and gave him safe haven, so he could recover from his wounds from the Battle of Marineford. After his successful recovery and training from Rayleigh along with the two year time skip, she took Luffy back to Sabaody and assisted in his escape to Fishman Island.
Haredas Amazon Lily arc to Return to Sabaody Arc A weather scientist on Weatheria who found Nami who was sent there by Bartholomew Kuma and took her into his home, teaching her about the sky island's weather science. He assisted in the Straw Hat Pirates' escape from the Sabaody Archipelago along with fellow Weatheria scientists by creating rain to ruin the Marines' gunpowder.
Heracles Amazon Lily arc to Return to Sabaody Arc A warrior trapped in the Boin Archipelago. He protected the hapless Usopp during their time on the island, though attempted to convince him that it was impossible to escape. He taught Usopp about the Pop Greens as part of his training. He later appeared on the Sabaody Archipelago to assist in the Straw Hat Pirates' escape.
Perona Amazon Lily arc to Return to Sabaody Arc Was formerly one of the Mysterious Four of Thriller Bark, but was sent by Bartholemew Kuma to Kuraigana Island, the same place that Zoro was sent to during the Straw Hats' battle with Kuma. While she was originally antagonistic, serving beneath Gekko Moriah, Perona grudgingly assisted Zoro during his time training with Dracule Mihawk. She later appeared on the Sabaody Archipelago to help Zoro and the other Straw Hats escape.
Buggy the Clown Impel Down arc to Marineford Arc Luffy came across Buggy attempting to break free from Impel Down in Level 1 of the Great Gaol. The ever-opportunistic Buggy attempted to use Luffy as his means to escape, but was only dragged down into the deeper levels during Luffy's attempt to rescue Portgas D. Ace. After Luffy was defeated by Magellan, Buggy and his new ally Mr. 3 ascended Impel Down back to Level 1, and, only with the help of Luffy and his band of escapees, managed to escape the Great Gaol. After arriving in Marineford, Buggy and his new crew, for the most part, neither assisted nor harmed Luffy and his allies in the Battle of Marineford; however, he was unwillingly used as a shield by Luffy against Dracule Mihawk. Upon the battle's end, Buggy returned Luffy's straw hat to Shanks and fled the battle with his new crew and Mr. 3.
Mr. 3 Impel Down arc to Marineford Arc Mr. 3, like Buggy, originally intended on using Luffy to escape Impel Down, but, again like Buggy, was dragged down to the deeper levels along with him. He and Buggy attempted to escape Impel Down, but were only able to do so with Luffy's assistance. After escaping Impel Down, Mr. 3 was moved by Mr. 2 Bon Kurei's sacrifice, to the point that he assisted Luffy in crafting the key to Ace's Kairoseki handcuffs as a means to avenge his fallen friend. He then fled the battle along with Buggy and his new crew.
Emporio Ivankov Impel Down arc to Post-War Arc The "Queen" of Kamabakka Kingdom and Newkama Land, and Revolutionary commander. He healed Luffy from the brink of death with his Horu Horu no Mi powers, and then, upon learning that Luffy was the son of Dragon, his leader, he assisted Luffy in breaking free from Impel Down. He then protected Luffy during the Battle of Marineford, being the one person as well as Jinbe to fight most by his side. After the war, he boarded a Marine ship along with his Newkama followers and, seeing that Luffy was in good hands with Boa Hancock, left with his people to return to his home. He was also responsible for helping Sanji during his two years of training in Kamabakka Kingdom.
Inazuma Impel Down arc to Post-War Arc Ivankov's right-hand man in both the Kamabakka Kingdom as well as the Revolutionary Army. He located Luffy and Mr. 2 Bon Kurei, and brought them to Newkama Land. He then fought alongside Luffy and his allies to break free from Impel Down, but was drastically poisoned by Magellan. After recovering, he assisted Luffy in the Battle of Marineford by creating a bridge for him to reach Ace. After the war, he returned to Kamabakka Kingdom with his leader and people.
Crocodile and Mr. 1 Impel Down arc The former leader of Baroque Works and his right-hand man. After coming across him in Level 6 of Impel Down, Luffy reluctantly freed him after being persuaded by Emporio Ivankov. During the escape, Crocodile set free Mr. 1, who had been caged in Level 4. After the escape, Crocodile made his intention of taking Whitebeard's head clear, upon which he immediately acted on as soon as he arrived in Marineford. During the Battle of Marineford, Crocodile fought on his own side, aligning himself with no one, and Mr. 1 loyally followed suit. During the course of the battle, he fought Luffy's allies, the Whitebeard Pirates, but then helped save Ace and even Luffy himself, claiming that he did it only because he didn't want the Marines to have their way. As such, Mr. 1 also helped protect Luffy against Dracule Mihawk. After the battle, Crocodile and Mr. 1 healed their wounds on an island in the Grand Line, deciding to enter the New World.
Jinbe Impel Down arc to Post-War arc, Fishman Island Former captain of the Sunny Pirates and former Shichibukai. He pleaded to Luffy to be freed from his cell in Impel Down so that he could help save Ace. Seeing the fishman's sincerity, Luffy freed Jinbe, and together they and their allies broke free from Impel Down. During the Battle of Marineford, Jinbe assisted Luffy from the start to its tragic end. After returning to Amazon Lily with Luffy, Jinbe managed to shake Luffy out of his depression over Ace's death by making him realize that he still had his crew. He then joined Luffy, along with Silvers Rayleigh, as they invaded Marineford once more so that Luffy could ring the Ox Bell. After the 2 year timeskip, Jinbe joined with the Straw Hats in dealing with the New Fishman Pirates when they arrived at Fishman Island.
Dracule Mihawk Post-War arc A member of the Shichibukai and the world's greatest swordsman. He somewhat tolerated Perona and Zoro's presence at his home on Kuraigana Island upon his return from the Whitebeard War. He relayed to Zoro the events that occurred concerning his captain, as well as offered a boat to help the Straw Hat swordsman leave the island. Mihawk initially dismissed Zoro's plea for training, assuming that Zoro simply couldn't defeat the Humandrills. However, upon Zoro revealing that he did defeat them and noticing that he was putting aside his pride for the sake of his friend, Mihawk agreed.
Surume Fishman Island Arc A fearsome Kraken from the depths of the ocean. Inspired by how the Caribou Pirates were using Mohmoo to pull their ship underwater, Luffy tamed the beast and made him an ally that aided them in getting to Fishman Island. Though in reality Surume is actually a slave under the New Fishman Pirates, the kraken, moved by Luffy's words, however chose to side with his new-found friends.

[edit] Groups

Along with individuals mentioned above, there has also been various groups that have assisted the Straw Hats in their adventures. These organizations have helped the Straw Hats either to reach a certain goal or to defeat a common enemy. One of the most notable of these is the Franky Family who, along with several other characters, formed an army of sorts in order to fight against a common foe.

Character(s) Arc Involved As Allies Involvement With the Straw Hats
Usopp's Pirates Captain Kuro arc The band of make believe pirates helped the Straw Hats in stopping Kuro's scheme in their own way despite being only kids.
Saruyama Alliance Jaya arc During the Straw Hats' time on Jaya, the alliance helped them to reach Skypiea. Their boss, Montblanc Cricket, informed them about how to reach the Sky Island through the use of the Knock Up Stream and the South Bird. The rest of the alliance modified the Going Merry into a "flying mode" to better maneuver the force of the current. Later, the Straw Hats repaid the alliance's efforts by ringing the Golden Bell thus clearing up the Montblanc family name.
Galley-La Company Water 7 arc to Post-Enies Lobby arc The company originally fought against the Straw Hats when they learned that their president, Iceburg, was almost assassinated by Nico Robin. When the truth was finally learned, the three of the remaining Galley-La foremen decided to join the Straw Hats to fight against CP9.[1] They, together with the Franky Family, formed a fighting force that invaded Enies Lobby and helped the Straw Hats reach their destination. After the Enies Lobby incident, the Galley-La company provided temporary room and board for the pirates while Iceburg and the foremen helped Franky build their new ship.[2]
Franky Family Water 7 arc to Post-Enies Lobby arc A gang consisting of the dregs of Water 7 who were originally on opposite sides with the Straw Hats. They however joined forces with the Straw Hats after their boss, Franky, was captured by CP9. Together with the Galley-La foremen, they formed an army that aided the Straw Hats in reaching their invasion of Enies Lobby. After the events in Enies Lobby, the gang gave the Straw Hats the Adam Wood they bought with the money they stole from the pirates. They did this as thanks for rescuing Franky and to provide the materials to replace the ship the pirates lost.
Thriller Bark Victim's Association Thriller Bark arc A group of Gekko Moriah's victims that include the Rolling Pirates in their ranks. They helped the Straw Hats in their battle against Moriah to reclaim back their shadows and against Bartholomew Kuma to protect Luffy. One of their prominent members, Lola gave them a Biblicard for her "mama" in the New World after everything was done.
Rosy Life Riders Sabaody Archipelago arc Initially antagonists of the Straw Hats due to the coincidental connection between leader Duval and the drawing on Sanji's Wanted poster. After Sanji reforms him to a more handsome face, the group becomes allies assisting them on the Sabaody Archipelago, particularly in locating Keimi after her capture by slave traders. They also protect Thousand Sunny in the 2 years skip when the Straw Hats were training and save Brook when he was escaping the Marines.
New Kama Landers Impel Down arc to Post-War Arc The denizens of New Kama Land who, lead by Emporio Ivankov, assisted Luffy in escaping Impel Down and attempting to rescue Portgas D. Ace. After the war's end, they escaped on the Marine ship that Boa Hancock had hijacked, and, upon seeing that Luffy was in Hancock's safe care, bid farewell and returned to their Kamabakka Kingdom.
Whitebeard Pirates and their allies Marineford Arc For the goal of rescuing Ace, Luffy joined forces with Whitebeard and his allies, gaining their trust and respect during the course of the Battle of Marineford. After Ace's death, the entire crew and all of Whitebeard's allies made protecting Luffy their top priority, and were willing to risk their lives so that he could live on to see the New Era.
Heart Pirates Marineford Arc to Post-War Arc With Luffy in a coma after seeing Ace die in his arms, the Heart Pirates decide to assist Luffy and Jinbe by facilitating their escape from Marineford. Transporting Luffy to Amazon Lily in order so that they can heal him. The Heart Pirates were docked on a small cliff on the island, but have since left.

[edit] Anime Only

In the anime adaptation, the Straw Hats have also had their share of allies and traveling companions. These individuals too have either traveled with them or aided them in some sort of way.

Character(s) Arc or Movie Involved As Allies Involvement With the Straw Hats
Akisu and Borodo Movie 2 Two thieves who traveled with the Straw Hats in the second movie after the Going Merry was supposedly stolen by the Trump Siblings. They aided the Straw Hats against Bear King and his pirates.
Apis and Ryuji Warship Island arc A little girl who ate the Hiso Hiso no Mi and a Thousand year Dragon who traveled with the Straw Hats after the Loguetown arc in the anime.[21] The Straw Hats aided them against Marine Commander Nelson Royale and Eric.
Anaguma and Shuraiya Bascùd Movie 4 A sister and brother who traveled with and helped the Straw Hats against Gasparde respectively in the fourth One Piece movie.
Phoenix Pirates Ice Hunter Arc A crew of pirates that aided the Straw Hats against the bounty hunter family, the Achino Family.

[edit] Locations Visited

While traveling, the Straw Hat Pirates have mostly visited islands in a formula-like pattern; the crew would travel from one island to another in order without backtracking or getting scattered by certain situations or forced to go off course - unless someone is taken away, the crew's visiting the island delays their voyage (i.e. partying on Commi Island or the national celebration in Arabasta), or leaving the Grand Line. It is not until Water 7 that things begin to shift from this 'formula'; the crew had to leave Water 7 to Enies Lobby to rescue Robin.

Before chapter 514, the Straw Hats had visited 20 islands in a straightforward pattern, with the entire crew together. In each saga, the Straw Hats mostly visited 5 - 10 or less islands, 8 islands in the East Blue Saga, 5 islands in the Baroque Works Saga, 2 Islands in the Skypiea Saga, 3 islands in the CP9 Saga, and 13 islands so far in the Whitebeard War Saga.

By chapter 514, One Piece took a different twist not seen before - and possibly not in any other manga/anime combo with a storyline like this; the entire Straw Hat crew was scattered, to 9 different islands (11 due to Luffy going to Impel Down and Marineford). Since entering the Grand Line, no Straw Hat Pirate had left the Grand Line. Now, Chopper is in South Blue, Robin is in East Blue, and the rest of the crew is scattered on the Grand Line, presumably far enough apart and on different Log Pose routes that they cannot reunite easily or by normal travel means (if you can call travelling on the Grand Line normal!). Most of the islands the crew visited were in one season and had one climate (i.e. spring or summer; perpetual snowing, canals, or being made of clouds) when examined in the order they were visited in, like Drum being snowy or Arabasta being sandy. Until now, the story has only used an island's specific theme one time and abandoned it to introduce the next one; this is no more, since Nami was sent to the sky island Weatheria, Franky was sent to another Winter island (despite having the mechanical theme of Karakuri from the seventh One Piece movie), and Luffy being sent to another jungle-themed island - Amazon Lily.

Currently, the crew has visited 34 locations.

[edit] Actions

Because the series focus on the Straw Hat Pirates, they were responsible for many actions throughout the 600+ chapters of their adventures. These actions can be considered either a blessing or curse depending on whose point of view it is taken from. Though the Straw Hat Pirates are an inner-circle group and don't care about worldly affairs, they become involved in many peoples' wars, usually bigger than themselves because they befriend the people involved. Most of these are people with a great amount of political power and authority behind them in some form. Their actions are often reported differently by the newspapers or the full details left unknown.

All actions done by the Straw Hats can be done by one member or the entire crew.

[edit] Miscellaneous Information

Over the course of the manga, Oda was often asked certain questions about the Straw Hats via the SBS sections. These questions were often about subtle stuff such as what colors represent the Straw Hats and other similar stuff. The following are Oda's answers to such questions.

[edit] Animal Resemblances

In a SBS question, a fan asked what animals would they best resemble. When this question was first asked, the Straw Hats had 6 members. At a later SBS, Oda provided the other animals for the remaining crew members.[22][23]

[edit] Specific Numbers

In relation to a SBS question about a shirt Nami wore with the number 3 on it, Oda showed the specific numbers that he uses to represent the Straw Hats. The majority of these numbers are different from the order Luffy's crew joined him. They are instead numbers representing the order of the Straw Hats as a whole. When this question was first asked, the Straw Hats only had 6 members. At a later SBS, Oda provided the other numbers for the remaining crew members.[24][23] Note that the title of the chapter where a member joins is the ordinal number one less than the personal number; for example Zoro joins in Chapter 6, The First. Recently, each Straw Hat got another number, which determined by the order of who arrived at the Sabaody Archipelago.[25]

[edit] Specific Colors

In a SBS question, a fan asked if each of the Straw Hats have specific colors. Oda replied and revealed the specific colors for each member. When this question was first asked, the Straw Hats only had 6 members. At a later SBS, Oda provided the other colors for the remaining crew members.[26][23]

[edit] Specific Smells

In a SBS question, a fan asked Oda that since Chopper had such an amazing blue nose that allows him to identify his fellow crewmates, what do they all smell like. When this question was first asked, the Straw Hats only had 6 members. At a later SBS, Oda provided the other smells for the remaining crew members. All but Chopper's smell were identified as Chopper can't tell what he himself smells like.[27][23]

[edit] Favorite Type of Island and Season

In a SBS question, a fan asked which type of island do each of the Straw Hats like among the different seasonal types of islands in the Grand Line. It was also asked which season of that island do the Straw Hats like. When this question was first asked, the Straw Hats only had 7 members. At a later SBS, Oda provided the other islands and seasons for the remaining crew members.[28][23]

  • Monkey D. Luffy: Summer but considers snow to be great; ultimately anywhere where there's meat
  • Roronoa Zoro: Autumn on an Autumn Island
  • Nami: Summer on a Spring Island
  • Usopp: Summer on an Autumn Island
  • Sanji: Robin-chan on a Nami-san Island

[edit] Favorite Food

In a SBS question, a fan asked what each of the Straw Hats' favorite foods were. Oda gave the following as a reply.[29]

  • Monkey D. Luffy: Meat.
  • Roronoa Zoro: White rice, sea king meat, and anything that complements ale.
  • Nami: Mainly tangerines as well as other kinds of fruit.
  • Usopp: Pike from an autumn island as well as other fish of the season, hates mushrooms.
  • Sanji: Spicy seafood pasta and food that complements black tea.
  • Tony Tony Chopper: Cotton candy, chocolate and other sweet food and drink.
  • Nico Robin: Sandwiches, cakes that aren't too sweet and food that complements coffee.
  • Franky: Hamburgers, french fries and food that complements cola.
  • Brook: Tea and takoyaki.

[edit] As a Family

In a SBS question, a fan asked if the Straw Hats were a family, what family member would each one be. When this question was first asked, Brook wasn't a member at the time. At a later SBS, Oda provided the answer to which family member would Brook be.[30][23]

[edit] Nationalities

In a SBS question, a fan asked if the Straw Hats were real, what nationality would they be of. Based on their appearances, Oda gave the following as a reply.[31]

[edit] Early One Piece

An early concept of the entire Straw Hat crew

In the early development of the entire Straw Hat crew, the original concept of the entire crew was much different than what is now. While four of the early character designs and concepts, namely Luffy, Nami, Zoro, and Sanji, more or less matched their final products, the rest however were very much different.[32]

The character that would be Usopp was originally designed very differently than his Pinocchio inspired image. Originally, he was a pirate with a tricorne and a facial design similar to Yasopp. Also in the original concept, he was designed to not only be the crew's sniper but also be Luffy's first mate.

The concept of Chopper, a reindeer doctor, was in place but his design was more of anthropomorphic deer that smoked. The concept of Brook, a skeleton musician, was also in place but his signature afro look was not finalized.

The original character concept of the Straw Hat's shipwright was originally a very small man. In the original crew concept also, there was a skinny character by the name of Franky who was to be the crew's weaponsmith. These two characters however were later merged and redesigned to Franky's final design.
